The Green: the heart of the old village

The Green preserves the village character that makes Kings Norton feel different from many outer Birmingham suburbs.

Kings Norton is now part of Birmingham, but the area around The Green still reads as an old village centre. The City Council specifically identifies The Green as the place where Kings Norton retains much of its earlier village character.

Around it sit some of the area's best-known historic buildings, including St Nicolas Church, the Old Grammar School and the former Saracen's Head. The surrounding streets and open space make this one of the clearest places to see the older settlement beneath the modern suburb.

The core was designated as a conservation area in 1969, helping protect the surviving historic townscape.
