The suffragettes who spared the Old Grammar School

Historic England records a remarkable 1913 suffragette incident at the Old Grammar School.

One of the strangest episodes in the building's history came in 1913. Historic England's educational record says that two women broke into the Old Grammar School intending to burn it down as part of the campaign for women's suffrage.

According to that record, they decided against destroying the building after being charmed by the old room, and instead left a message on the blackboard explaining that they had refrained from their intended act.

It is an unusual collision of national political history and a very local medieval building — and one of the more surprising stories attached to The Green.
