St Nicolas Church is one of Kings Norton's defining landmarks. Historic England lists it at Grade I and describes a church of Norman origin that is predominantly late 13th- and 14th-century, with a major 15th-century west tower and spire.

Birmingham City Council notes that the unusual crocketed spire is visible for several miles. The scale of the church also reflects Kings Norton's historical importance: the Council contrasts it with neighbouring Northfield and says it indicates that Kings Norton was the richer parish.

The church has therefore served both as a religious centre and a visual anchor for the settlement for centuries.
