Kings Norton station opened in 1849 on the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway route. Historical railway research describes it as one of the oldest stations on today's Cross-City Line.

The railway helped transform the area by making travel between Kings Norton and central Birmingham easier. Later expansion brought extra platforms, a goods yard and sidings serving local industry, including the Triplex works.

A 1972 Creative Commons photograph used here shows the station before modern Cross-City services, preserving a view of older station buildings and the original footbridge arrangement.
